INTRODUCING

BivySak -- The Story

Some of WeRiseCo’s best web design work has been a reaction to a problem. In this case, the concept for the website’s responsive design and recurring billing needed to get around a low budget. The WeRiseCo team didn’t know it at the time but their determination would lead to opportunities for this small startup to grow their brand through partnerships with established companies in their niche.

Bivysak, a seasonal subscription service comprised of curated products for outdoors enthusiasts, was created as a means to not only inspire exploration but also showcase the best gear and products.

Here’s how we helped bring their vision to life.

1

How we got in the mix

At the time, we were actively pitching startups across various industries to expand our network of like-minded entrepreneurs and companies. After seeing our work with other startups in similar positions and budgets, the co-founders of Bivysak reached out to request a meeting. They admired the functionality and simplicity of our recent web designs. They didn’t have much in the way of a budget and there was very little branding established. However, we looked at their project as an opportunity for challenge.

2

Getting Started: More Challenges

When we sat down to go over the specific needs of the project, one of the main hurdles immediately identified was the recurring billing feature. We had achieved this on previous projects, by building e-commerce websites on Shopify. However, Bivysak had a limited budget and monthly expenses can quickly add up on the Shopify platform.

What this meant for our team was extended research to find an affordable plugin that we could customize to meet their needs.

When all was said and done, we ended up integrating Woocommerce into Wordpress, building out the entire membership and subscription experience, while also creating additional one-off store items for purchase.

Let’s Talk Design & Layout

The design and layout was the easiest aspect of the entire project. We established very early that we wanted to utilize natural earth tone colors in conjunction with white to keep a minimalistic appearance. Also, we chose the Open Sans and Helvetica fonts to maintain our minimalist vision.

With the layout, we didn’t want to overwhelm visitors so we also kept this simple. We wanted to answer the main questions about the brand, subscription box, and products featured, while not having too much text. So we made the sections fairly large, included less than 2-3 sentences, and used pictures as breaking points.

To encourage sign-ups, we frequently included the call to actions, with the main CTA button floating in the menu area.

4

Additional features

Since outdoor adventure seekers are typically part of an unspoken community, we wanted to be sure to include a communal theme on the website. For this, we created a social media area near the bottom of the homepage layout that showcased Bivysak mentions from members across the web.

5

Blogging it Up

In real life, the Bivysak team was working hard to secure top brands and subscriptions to the box. However, they were also active outdoors enthusiasts themselves. So it was important that an area of the website have a personal touch, that highlights their own experiences. For this purpose, we kept it simple by turning this section into their blog.

In keeping with the simplistic layout of the rest of the website, the blog features little text, loads of pictures for each post, and relevant links to other areas of the website.

In the end, we were thrilled to accept a challenge that would push us to find a solution that would allow this startup to grow without causing significant financial strain. The result led to subscriptions to their seasonal box and opportunities to expand their business through partnerships with established companies.
